INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY PEASE, AMERICAN MASTER BLENDER (January 2008)
Riporto qui una intervista che facemmo tra fine 2007 e inizio 2008 a Gregory Pease, incentrata principalmente non su i suoi magnifici tabacchi ma sul suo rapporto con la pipa.
Questa intervista era andata persa, per varie ragioni, e sono finalmente riuscito a ritrovarla. La riporto sia nella sua forma originale in inglese che in una libera traduzione in italiano.
GREGORY PEASE AND PIPES
WHEN DID YOU START PIPE SMOKING?
I first started in high school, when I was about 16. It was a disaster, or rather a series of disasters. After a few failed attempts, I put it down, and didn’t pick it up again until 1979 when I was at university .
DID YOU PICK UP SMOKING THE PIPE BECAUSE YOU HAD SOMEBODY IN YOUR FAMILY WITH THIS PASSION OR DID YOU JUST PICK IT UP FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE?
In 1975, teachers still smoked in their offices. I had a chemistry teacher who smoked Borkum Riff, and I loved the whole idea of the pipe. At some point, I think I was 15, I screwed up my courage, and went into a drug store to buy a sandblasted Medico bent billiard and a pouch of Borkum Riff. I still have the pipe! One of these days, I should smoke it, for old time’s sake.
Of course, I was a minor, so it took a lot of guts to walk up to the counter, pipe and tobacco in hand, and try to present enough confidence that the clerk wouldn’t throw me out of the store. Today, it would never have happened.
ACCORDING TO YOU, HOW MUCH DO AMBIENT CONDITIONS INFLUENCE YOUR SMOKING PLEASURE?
I think things like weather play a significant role in the way any particular tobacco and pipe combination smokes. I don’t enjoy big Latakia blends in the heat of summer, for instance, whilst in the cooler, moister air of fall and winter, these are what I crave. I’ve also found that different geographical locations alter the experience because of ambient conditions. While I was in Denmark a couple years ago, I really enjoyed a blend that I can’t even smoke back home in California. It was quite eye-opening. I brought the rest of the tin home with me, and smoked it again in the same pipe. It was just as I remembered it - hot, sharp tasting, and not very pleasant!
ACCORDING TO YOU HOW MUCH DOES THE PIPE ITSELF INFLUENCE OR ENHANCE YOUR SMOKING PLEASURE?
Different pipes seem to have some sort of sympathy with different tobaccos, or different styles of tobaccos. Often, a pipe that doesn’t smoke an English mixture well will perform beautifully with a Virginia, or the other way round. I think the pipe is very important to the experience. Personally, I find that Latakia mixtures tend to be more demanding on the briar than other types, but others report just the opposite.
IN YOUR OPINION, HOW MUCH DOES THE PIPE SMOKER HIMSELF/HERSELF INFLUENCE THE QUALITY OF THE SMOKE?
The smoker is certainly part of the system. There are so many factors - what you’ve eaten, what your mood is, the weather, the pipe. Who knows? Maybe the phases of the moon play a role! ;-)
REGARDING YOUR PRIVATE PIPE COLLECTION: HOW MANY PIPES DO YOU OWN? HOW MANY BRIAR PIPES? HOW MANY MEERSCHAUM PIPES? ANY OTHER KIND OF MATERIAL?
I haven’t counted the pipes in my collection. I’ve been an avid collector since I started seriously enjoying the pipe. My collection is in a constant state of evolution, and I’ll trade pieces off to acquire new ones. It’s always changing. I have a few meerschaums, a couple interesting clays, a Morta pipe, but mostly, my first love is the briar. But the collection is in a constant state of change. I’ll sell a few and buy something different, or make interesting trades. I really don’t count, but it’s probably, now, around 200.
WHERE AND HOW DO YOU STORE YOUR PIPES?
LOL! Some are in racks, some in boxes, some in drawers, some in a case that makes them easy to transport. I do have one beautiful Italian-made cabinet with glass doors that holds 42 pipes.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST: EBONITE OR LUCITE STEMS?
I like stems that are well crafted, and don’t worry too much about the material. I like the maintenance free aspects of acrylic, but enjoy the classic beauty of vulcanite as well. Larry Roush has made some mouthpieces from antique Bakelite, and it’s a wonderful material. The artificial amber some makers use is also exquisite. As long as a mouthpiece is well crafted, I’m not that picky about the material.
ABOUT THE ITALIAN PIPE: LIST THREE ITALIAN PIPE MAKERS YOU REALLY LIKE AND TELL US THE REASON WHY YOU DO LIKE THEM SO MUCH.
Only three? That’s not easy...
Castellos are near the top of that list for me. They use excellent briar, well cured and long-aged, and the pipes are nicely made. They smoke wonderfully, delivering excellent flavour, and they’ve got a certain caché that is appealing. And, I think the pipes they’ve been producing over the past few years are the best they’ve ever made.
I love the work of Paolo Becker, too. His styles are fascinating, and his artistry is fabulous. Especially in the past few years, Paolo is really doing stunning work. He’s really innovating his shapes, and reaching new heights. And, I don’t think he’s running out of ideas!
Claudio Cavicchi makes wonderful pipes, too. He pays a lot of attention to the internals, to the details, and his pipes beautifully made. I’ve watched his work for a few years, and love what he’s doing with his shapes, exploring more of the classics, whilst bringing his unique perspective to them.
Really, there are so many great Italian pipe makers, that it’s impossible to narrow it down. I have pipes from many of the individual makers, and enjoy them all.
ABOUT THE ENGLISH PIPE: LIST THREE ENGLISH PIPE MAKERS YOU REALLY LIKE AND PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY.
That’s harder, still. The English pipes I cherish are the old ones - GBDs, Comoys, Dunhills, Barlings, Loewes, BBBs. There’s something satisfying about these old marques - the connection to history, and their age. A pipe that’s been well loved and well smoked for decades is a special treat.
Sadly, I think the quality of most of the newer pipes has suffered, and I haven’t followed them in some years. I do have some Ashtons that I quite like.
ABOUT THE DANISH PIPE: LIST THREE DANISH PIPES YOU LIKE AND PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY.
Peter Heeschen’s pipes are wonderful. They’re beautiful, and made to be smoked. They’re smaller pipes, usually, so they tend to be light and comfortable. When I first discovered his pipes, I fell in love with them. I liked them so much, I became his North American “ambassador,” representing him here for several years.
Tom Eltang has one of the best eyes in the history of pipe making, I think. His sense of line and form is impeccable. I’ve often said that Tom simply can not make an ugly pipe, and year after year, he proves this to be true. He’s innovative and creative, and continues to explore. His work is beautiful.
Then, there’s Teddy Knudsen. It’s hard to say anything about Teddy’s work that hasn’t already been said. He just makes amazing things, and has mastered the concept of the freeform pipe. HIs work is powerfully sculptural, and presents the briar in a beautiful way. I only wish I could afford them!
ABOUT THE AMERICAN PIPE: LIST THREE AMERICAN PIPES YOU LIKE AND PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY.
There are so many amazing pipes being made in North America these days, and I haven’t had an opportunity to try most of them - there are SO many! For a few years, I’ve been really impressed with the work of Will Purdy, Jack Howell, and, of course, Larry Roush. These makers have unique styles, and work hard to produce an excellent smoking instrument capable of delivering a great experience. I’ve got my eyes on quite a few others, though, too, and am looking forward to trying their pipes.
Will’s work is so fresh, so new. I love his freeform shapes, and his interpretations of the classics are vibrant, and, they’re exquisitely made. I’ve often described Will’s pipes as “articulate,” and I can’t really think of a better word to describe their smoking characteristics. They deliver every nuance of the smoke accurately. When I’m working on a new blend, I will always smoke it in a Will Purdy pipe to make sure I’ve not missed something. I’ve watched Will’s work from the very beginning, and am continually thrilled with the direction he’s taking. When I saw Will’s first work, I was already impressed, and it just keeps getting better.
Jack Howell has come a long way in a short time. His work is excellent, and he’s been exploring new shapes, increasing his aesthetic vocabulary quite a bit in the past couple years. He’s making some fantastic pipes. I’ve got one of his early pipes, and it’s a fine pipe, but his more recent pieces are so far beyond his more humble start, it’s almost like they’re coming from a different maker. He’s really blossomed as a pipe artist in the past couple years.
There’s little to say about Roush that I’ve not said before. HIs style is uniquely his, and he’s an absolute purist about so many things. You can spot a Roush pipe from across the room. They’re bold and powerful, sculpturally, and they almost always feel fantastic in the hand. Larry goes the extra distance with his treatment of the wood, too. His pipes smoke superbly.
I have to mention another maker, Darius Dah, who makes GRC Pipes. He’s been in and out of the pipe making world, but it looks like he’s back to stay, and he’s making some beautiful things, and his workmanship is excellent. His prices, at the moment, are excellent. He’s a guy to watch, I think.
Really, I think it’s a very exciting time to be interested in North American makers. There are some world class pipes being produced on this continent!
LET'S TALK ABOUT A LEGEND: DUNHILL PIPES. RUMORS ARE THAT THEY ARE PLANNING ON SHUTTING DOWN THEIR PIPE PRODUCTION. ARE YOU AWARE OF THAT? AND WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN TO PIPE SMOKING?
I’ve not heard that, but it would be a shame. Dunhill have a long and storied history, and to see them leave the world of pipes would be a real tragedy. They’ve continuously produced pipes of quality, and have, for the most part, done a good job of maintaining a connection to the legacy of their founder. I know I’m not alone in hoping that they maintain a presence in the world of pipes.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO GREGORY PEASE: IS IT HIS COLLECTION OF PIPES OR IS IT THE TOBACCO IN HIS CELLAR?
They’re both important. Pipe smoking to me is a complete experience, a synergy of the pipe and the tobacco. Part of the enjoyment is the aesthetic appreciation of a beautiful pipe, and I don’t think I’d enjoy the smoking as much if not for that. I can’t really separate the pipe or the tobacco from the overall experience. It would be like an artist trying to decide whether his brushes or his paints are more important to the result.

QUANDO HAI INIZIATO A FUMARE LA PIPA?
Ho iniziato al liceo, quando avevo circa 16 anni. È stato un disastro, o meglio una serie di disastri. Dopo alcuni tentativi falliti, l'ho messa giù e l'ho ripresa solo nel 1979, quando ero all'università.
HAI RIPRESO A FUMANDO LA PIPA PERCHÉ AVEVI QUALCUNO IN FAMIGLIA CON QUESTA PASSIONE O L'HAI PRESA DA QUALCUN ALTRO?
Nel 1975 gli insegnanti fumavano ancora nei loro uffici. Avevo un insegnante di chimica che fumava Borkum Riff e mi è piaciuta l'intera idea della pipa. Ad un certo punto, credo avessi 15 anni, ho fatto un casino e sono andato in un drugstore a comprare una billiard curva Medico sabbiata e un sacchetto di Borkum Riff. Ho ancora la pipa! Uno di questi giorni dovrei fumarla, per amor dei vecchi tempi.
Certo, ero minorenne, quindi ci è voluto molto coraggio per andare al bancone, pipa e tabacco in mano, e cercare di mostrare abbastanza sicurezza che l'impiegato non mi buttasse fuori dal negozio. Oggi non sarebbe mai successo.
SECONDO TE, QUANTO INFLUENZANO LE CONDIZIONI AMBIENTALI SUL SUO PIACERE DI FUMARE?
Penso che cose come il tempo atmosferico svolgano un ruolo significativo nel modo in cui una particolare combinazione di tabacco e pipa fuma. Non mi piacciono le grandi miscele di Latakia nella calura estiva, per esempio, mentre nell'aria più fresca e umida dell'autunno e dell'inverno, queste sono ciò che desidero. Ho anche scoperto che diverse posizioni geografiche alterano l'esperienza a causa delle condizioni ambientali. Mentre ero in Danimarca un paio di anni fa, mi è davvero piaciuta una miscela che non riesco nemmeno a fumare a casa in California. Mi ha aperto gli occhi. Ho portato a casa il resto della latta e l'ho fumato di nuovo nella stessa pipa. Era proprio come me lo ricordavo: piccante, piccante e non molto piacevole!
SECONDO TE LA PIPA QUANTO INFLUENZA O AUMENTA IL PIACERE NEL FUMARE?
Pipe diverse sembrano avere una sorta di affinità per tabacchi diversi o stili di tabacco diversi. Spesso, una pipa che non fuma bene una miscela inglese funzionerà magnificamente con una Virginia, o viceversa. Penso che la pipa sia molto importante per l'esperienza. Personalmente, trovo che le miscele di Latakia tendano a chiedere di più da una pipa in radica rispetto ad altre tipologie, ma altri sono dell'opinione opposta.
QUANTO INFLUENZA IL FUMATORE DI PIPE STESSO SULLA QUALITÀ DEL FUMO?
Il fumatore fa sicuramente parte del sistema. Ci sono tanti fattori: cosa hai mangiato, qual è il tuo umore, il tempo, la pipa. Chi lo sa? Forse le fasi lunari giocano un ruolo! ;-)
PER QUANTO RIGUARDA LA TUA RACCOLTA DI PIPE PRIVATA: QUANTI PIPE HAI? QUANTE PIPE IN RADICA? QUANTE PIPE IN SCHIUMA? QUALCHE ALTRO TIPO DI MATERIALE?
Non ho contato le pipe nella mia collezione. Sono stato un appassionato collezionista da quando ho iniziato a godermi seriamente la pipa. La mia collezione è in un costante stato di evoluzione e scambierò pezzi per acquisirne di nuovi. È sempre in evoluzione. Ho qualche schiuma di mare, un paio di creta interessantI, una pipa in Morta, ma soprattutto, il mio primo amore è la radica. Ma la collezione è in un continuo stato di cambiamento. Ne venderò alcuni e comprerò qualcosa di diverso, o farò scambi interessanti. Davvero non conto, ma probabilmente, ora, sono circa 200.
DOVE E COME CONSERVATE LE TUE PIPE?
LOL! Alcuni sono negli scaffali, alcuni nelle scatole, alcuni nei cassetti, altri in una custodia che li rende facili da trasportare. Ho un bellissimo mobiletto di fabbricazione italiana con ante in vetro che contiene 42 pipe.
COSA TI PIACE DI PIÙ: BOCCHINI IN EBONITE O LUCITE?
Mi piacciono I bocchini ben realizzati e non mi preoccupo troppo del materiale. Mi piacciono gli aspetti esenti da manutenzione dell'acrilico, ma mi piace anche la bellezza classica della vulcanite. Larry Roush ha realizzato dei bocchini con l'antica bachelite, ed è un materiale meraviglioso. Anche l'ambra artificiale usata da alcuni produttori è squisita. Finché un bocchino è ben realizzato, non sono così esigente riguardo al materiale.
SULLA PIPA ITALIANA: ELENCA TRE PRODUTTORI DI TUBI ITALIANI CHE TI PIACCIONO DAVVERO E DICI IL MOTIVO PER CUI TI PIACCIONO TANTO.
Solo tre? Non è facile...
Le Castello sono in cima alla lista per me. Usano ottima radica, ben stagionata e di lunga stagionatura, e le pipe sono ben fatte. Fumano meravigliosamente, offrendo un sapore eccellente e hanno una certa cache che è attraente. E penso che le pipe che hanno prodotto negli ultimi anni siano le migliori che abbiano mai realizzato.
Amo anche il lavoro di Paolo Becker. I suoi stili sono affascinanti e la sua abilità artistica è favolosa. Soprattutto negli ultimi anni, Paolo sta facendo davvero un lavoro straordinario. Sta davvero innovando le sue forme e raggiungendo nuove vette. E non credo che stia finendo le idee!
Anche Claudio Cavicchi fa delle pipe meravigliose. Presta molta attenzione agli interni, ai dettagli e alle sue pipe ben fatte. Ho osservato il suo lavoro per alcuni anni e amo quello che sta facendo con le sue forme, esplorando più dei classici, mentre porta loro la sua prospettiva unica.
Davvero, ci sono così tanti grandi produttori di pipe italiani, che è impossibile restringere il campo. Ho pipe di molti dei singoli produttori e mi piacciono tutte.
SULLA PIPE INGLESE: ELENCA TRE PRODUTTORI DI PIPE INGLESI CHE TI PIACCIONO DAVVERO E SPIEGARE PER FAVORE PERCHE'.
È ancora più difficile. Le pipe inglesi a cui tengo sono le vecchie: GBD, Comoy, Dunhills, Barlings, Loewe, BBB. C'è qualcosa di soddisfacente in questi vecchi marchi: il legame con la storia e la loro età. Una pipa che è stata ben amata e fumata per decenni è un piacere speciale.
Purtroppo, penso che la qualità della maggior parte delle pipe più recenti abbia risentito e non le seguo da alcuni anni. Ho delle Ashton che mi piacciono molto.
INFORMAZIONI SULLA PIPA DANESE: ELENCA TRE PIPE DANESE CHE TI PIACCIONO E SPIEGARE PER FAVORE PERCHE'.
Le pipe di Peter Heeschen sono meravigliose. Sono belle e fatte per essere fumate. Di solito sono pipe più piccole, quindi tendono ad essere leggere e comode. Quando ho scoperto le sue pipe per la prima volta, me ne sono innamorato. Mi sono piaciute così tanto che sono diventato il suo "ambasciatore nordamericano", rappresentandolo qui per diversi anni.
Tom Eltang ha uno dei migliori occhi nella storia della produzione di pipe, credo. Il suo senso della linea e della forma è impeccabile. Ho detto spesso che Tom semplicemente non può fare una brutta pipa e, anno dopo anno, dimostra che è vero. È innovativo e creativo e continua a esplorare. Il suo lavoro è bellissimo.
Poi c'è Teddy Knudsen. È difficile dire qualcosa sul lavoro di Teddy che non sia già stato detto. Fa semplicemente cose straordinarie e ha imparato il concetto di pipa a forma libera. Il suo lavoro è potentemente scultoreo e presenta la radica in un modo bellissimo. Vorrei solo potermele permettere!
SULLE PIPE AMERICANE: ELENCA TRE PIPE AMERICANE CHE TI PIACCIONO E PER FAVORE SPIEGARE IL PERCHÉ.
Ci sono così tante pipe straordinarie che vengono prodotte in Nord America in questi giorni e non ho avuto l'opportunità di provarne la maggior parte: ce ne sono così tante! Per alcuni anni sono rimasto davvero colpito dal lavoro di Will Purdy, Jack Howell e, naturalmente, Larry Roush. Questi produttori hanno stili unici e lavorano duramente per produrre un eccellente strumento per fumare in grado di offrire una grande esperienza. Ho messo gli occhi su parecchi altri, però, e non vedo l'ora di provare le loro pipe.
Il lavoro di Will è così fresco, così nuovo. Adoro le sue forme libere e le sue interpretazioni dei classici sono vivaci e sono realizzate in modo squisito. Ho spesso descritto le pipe di Will come "articolate" e non riesco davvero a pensare a una parola migliore per descrivere le loro caratteristiche di fumo. Forniscono accuratamente ogni sfumatura del fumo. Quando lavoro su una nuova miscela, la fumerò sempre in una pipa Will Purdy per assicurarmi di non perdermi qualcosa. Ho osservato il lavoro di Will fin dall'inizio e sono continuamente entusiasta della direzione che sta prendendo. Quando ho visto il primo lavoro di Will, ero già impressionato e continua a migliorare.
Jack Howell ha fatto molta strada in poco tempo. Il suo lavoro è eccellente e negli ultimi due anni ha esplorato nuove forme, aumentando un po' il suo vocabolario estetico. Sta facendo delle pipe fantastiche. Ho una delle sue prime pipe, ed è una bella pipa, ma i suoi pezzi più recenti sono così ben oltre il suo inizio più umile, è quasi come se provenissero da un produttore diverso. È davvero sbocciato come artista di pipe negli ultimi due anni.
C'è poco da dire su Roush che non ho detto prima. Il SUO stile è unicamente suo ed è un assoluto purista di così tante cose. Puoi individuare un pipa Roush dall'altra parte della stanza. Sono audaci e potenti, scultoree e quasi sempre si sentono fantasticamente nella mano. Anche Larry va oltre con il trattamento del legno. Le sue pipe fumano superbamente.
Devo menzionare un altro produttore, Darius Dah, che produce GRC Pipes. È entrato e uscito dal mondo della produzione di pipe, ma sembra che sia tornato per restare, e sta facendo delle cose bellissime, e la sua fattura è eccellente. I suoi prezzi, al momento, sono ottimi. È un ragazzo da tenere d'occhio, credo.
Davvero, penso che sia un momento molto eccitante per interessarsi ai produttori nordamericani. Ci sono alcune pipe di classe mondiale prodotte in questo continente!
PARLIAMO DI UNA LEGGENDA: LE PIPE DUNHILL. LE VOCI SONO CHE STANNO PIANIFICARE DI CHIUDERE LA PRODUZIONE DI PIPE. NE SEI A CONOSCENZA? E CHE COSA COSA SIGNIFICHEREBBE PER CHI FUMA LA PIPA?
Non l'ho sentito, ma sarebbe un peccato. Dunhill ha una storia lunga e leggendaria e vederli lasciare il mondo delle pipe sarebbe una vera tragedia. Hanno prodotto continuamente pipe di qualità e, per la maggior parte, hanno fatto un buon lavoro nel mantenere un legame con l'eredità del loro fondatore. So di non essere il solo a sperare che mantengano una presenza nel mondo delle pipe.
QUAL È LA COSA PIÙ IMPORTANTE PER GREGORY PEASE: È LA SUA RACCOLTA DI PIPE O È IL TABACCO NELLA SUA CANTINA?
Sono entrambi importanti. Fumare la pipa per me è un'esperienza completa, una sinergia tra la pipa e il tabacco. Parte del divertimento è l'apprezzamento estetico di una bella pipa, e non credo che mi piacerebbe molto fumare se non fosse per quello. Non riesco davvero a separare la pipa o il tabacco dall'esperienza complessiva. Sarebbe come un artista che cerca di decidere se i suoi pennelli o i suoi colori sono più importanti per il risultato.
